Hannah Arendts Hauptwerk "The Origins of Totalitarianism" (1951) war ein Meilenstein in der Werkbiographie von Hannah Arendt und für die Geistesgeschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts.
ENGLISH VERSION
"The Origins of Totalitarianism", first published in 1951, was a milestone in the professional biography of Hannah Arendt; likewise it was a milestone in the intellectual history of the 20th century. The book turned Arendt into a public intellectual virtually overnight. Though she was not the first person to use the adjective "totalitarian" when speaking of Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union under Stalin, she wrote the one book on totalitarianism that would, in the longue durée, become the most influential one by far. It is now considered one of the most important books of the 20th century. With it, Arendt had intervened not only in an academic discourse, but also in a highly current debate on the nature of communist rule and history which is why it soon got tangled up in Cold War politics. Today, her insights into the origins of totalitarianism have a haunting timeliness.
