Inspired by BBC Radio 4’s programme “Only Artists”, this evening exchange brings two art professionals together to talk about their intellectual and creative work. The agenda is theirs, the conversation is free-flowing, and there is no moderator.
Fülscher and Shannon will discuss modernist architecture in the climate of the Cold War, comparing forms and politics across the East-West divide. They consider the roles of race and gender, the relationships between architecture and art, and the buildings' intended audiences.
+++++
Christiane Fülscher is an art historian and architect. Her research focuses on architectural history and theory from the 19th century to the present with a special emphasis on East and West European modernism and post-war architecture, also encompassing its cultural and socio-political relevance. Since 2022 she is professor of architectural history, theory, and preservation at the Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts.
+++++
Joshua Shannon is Professor of Contemporary Art History and Theory at the University of Maryland, USA. His research and teaching investigate modern and contemporary art in relationship to social and cultural history, with special interests in architecture, cities, landscape, and ecology.
