Standard data models are becoming increasingly important for power grid operators - however, such data models are designed for “machine-to-machine” exchange and are hardly understandable for human use. The Python library “pandapower” is an easy-to-use open source tool for modeling, analyzing and optimizing future energy systems with a high level of automation.
At the end of 2022, scientists at Fraunhofer IEE published an open-source, easy-to-use and adaptable translator for data between the standard data model “CIM CGMES” and “pandapower” - “cim2pp”.
In this session we provide both a theoretical overview as well as practical examples and demonstrations of “cim2pp”. In addition to pure data translation, we show how to use the downstream pandapower libraries to analyze grid data and data errors.
The workshop is aimed at everyone who is involved with standard data models in the process of grid digitization, wants to better understand CIM and pandapower and wants to get to know the “cim2pp” converter. The target groups of the workshop are employees of:
- Distribution system operators
- Transmission system operators
- Software developers
- Research institutes
- Universities
Workshop participants receive an introduction to the CIM data model, CIM profiles (CGMES, CDPSM), and the basics of translating CGMES to pandapower. In practical examples we show how to use “cim2pp” yourself, for example in order to visualize data in pandapower or to understand data errors.

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.
You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).
Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.
You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).
If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
