Survival Ecology - New pathways for European nature conservation?

The online-session is inspired by a paper named “In the Climate Emergency, Conservation Must Become Survival Ecology”, in which the authors Charlie Gardner and James Bullock refer to climate change to challenge current approaches to nature conservation and propose new pathways for the future. We are therefore very happy to welcome both authors to the event, and have them stand ready for questions and remarks.

Dear (aspiring) nature conservationists and -enthusiasts!

“In the climate emergency, conservation must become Survival Ecology”
(Gardner & Bullock 2021). The authors introduce Survival Ecology as a concept
and paradigm shift: a new perspective, which “rather than seeking to maintain a
world which will no longer exist, [...] acknowledges unavoidable change and
seeks to shape the world that […] looks to the future, not the past”. Its ultimate
objective is to maintain the conditions for complex life, instead of focusing on
maintaining the diversity of life. A change in narrative should emphasize healthy
ecosystems and biodiversity as crucial for human existence and advocate for a
safeguarding of an earth system that in which both humans and other species
can survive.

In this online session we want to discuss the added value of the concept for
European nature conservation strategies. The aim is a critical exchange between
scientists, policy makers and practitioners, looking into the future of nature
conservation in the context of global change.

Programme:

11:00 - Welcome and introduction (CULT)
11:15 - Survival Ecology - introduction tot the concept by Charlie Gardner
12:00 - Q&A Session with Charlie Gardner and James Bullock
12:45 - Summary, conclusion and further activities
13:00 - End of the online session

Dr. Charlie Gardner is an associate senior lecturer and researcher in conservation
science at the University of Kent (UK), a practitioner and an activist with a particular
interest in societal responses to the climate and biodiversity emergencies
(https://www.charliegardner.net/).

Prof. James Bullock is a globally-leading expert on the spatial dynamics and
management of biodiversity at the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology in Wallingford
(https://www.ceh.ac.uk/staff/james-bullock).

The Competence Centre Cultural Landscape (CULT) in Geisenheim, Germany,
undertakes research, but also organises events and trainings. A special focus of our
work lies in supporting critical debates and developing cooperative networks with
diverse sets of stakeholders to promote change.

Information on participating / attending:
Joining our session is absolutely free of charge, but to allow us an overview over participant numbers please register here: https://veranstaltungen.hs-geisenheim.de/event/survival-ecology-new-pathways-for....

Shortly before the event you will receive the link to the online session. As a meeting tool, we will use Greenlight/Big Blue Button.

The session will take place in English, but will be moderated by a German-speaking team, so if you feel comfortable to listen to an English presentation but less so in formulating own questions, we will be able to help you translate whatever it is you might want to ask.

Combination of search terms

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.

Brackets

You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).

Phrases

Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.

Selection criteria

You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).

If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
