»The Sad Citizen: How Politics Is Depressing and Why It Matters«

Is politics depressing? At first glance, the answer might seem to be no. Unlike anger, anxiety, and fear, which are visible and loud, depression prefers solitude, and so it is rarely seen in politics. Yet there is growing evidence that political problems, ranging from electoral loss to polarization to climate change, are leaving Western democracies in the throes of malaise. This is concerning because democracy should empower citizens rather than leave them depressed. In his book »The Sad Citizen« and also in this first lecture this term Prof. Ojeda takes up this issue by drawing together theories from political science, sociology, and psychology to explain how politics is depressing, why that matters, and what we can do about it.
