Politics and Literature in Postwar European Journals (1945-1975)

This workshop brings together international scholars to discuss the multiple intersections between politics and literature in post-war Europe through the lens of literary-cultural journals.

It is well known that literary writers frequently collaborated in journals, contributing with their own work, translations, critical essays, political writings, as well as occasionally taking on editorial roles. Frequently cutting across multiple disciplines, these journals serve as vibrant laboratories of ideas. As ‘intermediaries’ where the literary field intersects with the intellectual and political fields, they have played a key role in the development of literary politics. In addition, these journals often established links between writers, authors and thinkers from different contexts, both within national boundaries and transnationally. This event aims to explore the impure or intricate nature of literature by tracing some of these crossings, hybridisations, and transfers. Moreover, close attention will be paid to concordances and divergences, both synchronically (between different countries and/or different ideologies) and diachronically (throughout the relevant period, marked by, among others, destalinisation and decolonisation).

To ensure coherence, the workshop will focus on the France-Germany-Italy axis, with a particular emphasis on the role of journals in fostering cross-border interactions. We invite participants to explore case studies where borders (between nations, ideologies, disciplines, etc.) are crossed through literary exchanges, including interactions between authors, notable translations and their subsequent influence, as well as debates around particular literary works, authors, or political events. We welcome presentations that aim to capture, analyse, and critically engage with the politico-literary ‘echoes’ or ‘resonances’ that link countries to each other and to other regions, such as Eastern Europe and former colonised territories. Finally, we also invite participants to reflect on methodological issues related to transnational historiography, for example, or the specificity of journals as a medium in shaping the transmission of meaning. The latter can be explored, for example, in relation to the social and political dynamics of publishing, editorial practices, and translation in the post-war period.

We invite scholars from a range of disciplines, including but not limited to comparative literature, intellectual history, literary sociology, and periodical studies.
