In order to understand social processes, their social and cultural conditions must be considered. What concepts underlie highly relevant social and political issues such as migration, diversity, family and health? What role do they play in demographic research and policy?
The one-day online workshop “Cultural Demography” invites participants to address these questions from an interdisciplinary perspective. It brings together outstanding researchers, particularly from the social sciences and humanities, to discuss the complex connections between culture and demography with an interested audience in four panels.

In the opening panel I, Andreas Edel (Population Europe), Ron Lesthaeghe (em., Free University of Brussels), Pieter Vanhuysse (University of Southern Denmark), and Sigrid Weigel (em., Leibniz Center for Literary and Cultural Studies) will encourage participants to reflect on the complex relationships between culture and demography.
The following three panels then invite a critical reflection on the concepts of migration, diversity, family, health, and ageing.
In Panel II, Adrian Favell (University College Cork), Steven Vertovec (Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity), François Héran (Collège de France) and Michèle Lamont (Harvard University) will discuss the extent to which classification and identity categories are culturally connoted and what significance this has for our understanding of diversity.
In Panel III, Arnstein Aassve (University of Bocconi), Vegard Skirbekk (Columbia University, Norwegian Institute of Public Health) and Ruth Zafran (Reichmann University) will examine the connections between changing norms and social cohesion and resilience, focusing in particular on the role of the family.
In Panel IV, Vanessa di Lego (Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais), Kaspar Staub (University of Bern) and Verena Klusmann-Weißkopf (Furtwangen University) will discuss how to understand health and related concepts such as ageing, well-being and care. A concluding panel discussion with the chairs of the four panels will summarize the results of the discussion.
The “Cultural Demography” workshop is organized by Population Europe, the European research network of leading demography institutes affiliated with the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research. The event is part of the Population Europe Policy Lab, which promotes an evidence-based exchange between politics, business, civil society and the public sector.
