India’s prime minister, Narendra Modi, is aware of his country’s strategic importance to US attempts at hedging China, and he is also deepening ties with Putin’s Russia. India simultaneously maintains close strategic relations with France, Germany, Japan, and Australia. With its strategy of “multi-alignment” in international affairs, India claims to be a leader of the Global South. The GIGA’s team of India experts, alongside Sharinee Jagtiani from the German Marshall Fund in Berlin and Germany’s ambassador to India, Philipp Ackermann, debate the country’s geopolitical sweet spot – and the threats it faces.
