“Non-wage amenities” by Alexandre Mas

This Handbook chapter reviews the analysis of non-wage amenities in the workplace. The competitive model is the point of departure, but the emphasis is on models of imperfect competition that have greater empirical relevance. In addition to the traditional hedonic model for estimating preferences over job characteristics, I review revealed-preference methods that are better suited when there are deviations from perfect competition.

We are continuing the RFBerlin Masterclass Series, based on the Handbook of Labour Economics. We invite authors to Berlin for in-depth, two-day teaching sessions. This time, we welcome Alexandre Mas. He is a Professor at the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley, and serves as co-Director of the Labor Studies program at the National Bureau of Economic Research. His work focuses on labor markets, human resources, and the empirical analysis of workplace behaviour, drawing on advanced data and statistical methods. He is a Research Fellow at the Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA) as well as a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research.
