Protecting Green Innovations - The Relevance of Intellectual Property Rights for Ghanaian Green Enterprises
Africa’s green transition depends on domestic firms' ability to develop, protect, and commercialise technology. In Ghana, however, weak uptake of intellectual property (IP) systems continues to constrain the scale‑up of green enterprises, despite strong national ambitions for green growth and innovation. Patent use remains particularly limited. Since 2014, patent applications originating from Africa have grown by just 0.1 per cent, compared with nearly 10 per cent growth in Asia. In practice, many Ghanaian green start‑ups face high filing costs, procedural complexity and limited advisory support, discouraging engagement with existing IP frameworks. This gap between policy ambition and innovation protection warrants focused attention.
To develop concrete solutions, the Africa Policy Research Institute (APRI), through its Just Green Technology Transition Programme, in partnership with the Strategic Youth Network for Development and the Ghana Climate and Innovation Centre, is convening an expert webinar with green enterprises in Ghana. The webinar will outline targeted reforms that could better align Ghana’s IP regime with the needs of early‑stage green enterprises and national green industrialisation objectives.
We warmly invite you to join the conversation.
