When can we expect the next wave of NPLs? Professor Schalast talks about credit and risk management

Will COVID-19 trigger a wave of non-performing loans (NPLs) in Germany, or are such concerns unfounded? The overall volume of NPLs is still at a historic low. Over the last few months, government aid programmes and the suspension of compulsory insolvency legislation have provided generous support in German-speaking countries. But many assistance programmes for businesses and the broader economy are due to expire in the near future.

• So far, every economic crisis of the last few decades has resulted in a huge surge of NPLs. How is 2021 any different?
• Why have the European Central Bank and European Banking Authority been so concerned with risk provisioning for NPLs for so many years – and even more so since the pandemic started? Is this problem solely confined to the European Union’s member states in southern Europe?
• How can NPLs be deleveraged efficiently? Do we need a pan-European NPL platform? Do we need a pan-European administration or liquidation authority?

These are the issues which Professor Christoph Schalast, Professor of Mergers & Acquisitions, Business Law and European Law at Frankfurt School, intends to address at a reporters’ roundtable on 15 June 2021. We cordially invite all interested members of the press to attend, and will send you a link to the virtual roundtable when you register for the event.
