Im Jahr 2050 dürfte Deutschland Prognosen zufolge nur noch etwa 70 Millionen Einwohner haben. Zwar sterben hierzulande seit 1972 mehr Menschen als geboren werden, aber bis 2002 ließ sich dieser natürliche Schwund über die Zuwanderung ausgleichen. Seit 2003 schrumpft die Bevölkerung – zunächst in kleinen und künftig in immer größeren Schritten. Der Sterbeüberschuss wird sich bis Mitte des Jahrhunderts auf rund eine halbe Million Menschen pro Jahr summieren. Bereits heute verlieren etwa zwei Drittel aller Kreise Bevölkerung. Am gravierendsten ist die Entwicklung in Ostdeutschland, wo lediglich in zehn Großstädten die Einwohnerzahlen zu Lasten des ländlichen Raumes zulegen. Auch Westdeutschland ist entlang der früheren innerdeutschen Grenze und entlang der Grenze zu Tschechien von Bevölkerungsverlust betroffen. Ebenso verlieren das Ruhrgebiet, die Südwestpfalz und das Saarland Einwohner.
