In der Wildtypzelle (links) wird die durch Photosynthese erzeugte Energie zur Herstellung von ATP verwendet. In der gentechnisch veränderten Zelle (rechts) kann ein beachtlicher Teil der Energie in Form von Protonen (H+) ohne ATP-Erzeugung die Membran durchqueren. Infolge dieser "Undichtigkeit" der ATPase können bestimmte Photosyntheseprozesse mindestens doppelt so schnell ablaufen. Die zusätzlich gewonnenen Elektronen könnten biotechnologisch nutzbar gemacht werden (siehe Fragezeichen), z.B. durch Einführung eines Enzyms, welches Wasserstoff erzeugt (Hydrogenase).
