Im Arabischen Meer vor der Küste Omans liefert die dissimilatorische Nitritreduktion DNRA (blau) das Ammonium für die Anammox-Reaktion (gelb), so wird das N2 gebildet, welches aus dem Meer entweichen kann. Nitratreduktion und Nitrifikation als Quellen von Nitrit und Ammonium finden ebenfalls statt. Auf der anderen Seite wurden nur wenige Indizin für aktive Denitrifikation gefunden (rot gestrichelter Reaktionsweg)
