Abb. 1: Schema des Proton-Proton-Fusionszyklus: Vier Protonen verschmelzen zu einem Heliumkern. Dargestellt ist die Hauptkomponente des Zyklus, die etwa 91% der Fusionsleistung der Sonne ausmacht. Der Rest entfällt auf zwei weitere Teilzyklen mit 7Be- und 8Be als Zwischenprodukten, die ebenfalls Neutrinos emittieren. In der linken Schleife ist die übliche Startreaktion (pp), die Verschmelzung zweier Protonen gezeigt. Das Neutrino teilt sich hier die Reaktionsenergie mit einem Positron. Rechts exemplarisch die seltenere pep-Reaktion, die zusätzlich ein Elektron einbezieht. Hier erhält das Neutrino praktisch die gesamte Reaktionsenergie.
