Zellen, die mit Aminolävulinsäure inkubiert werden, bilden Protoporphyrin IX (PpIX), das in der fluoreszenzmikroskopischen Aufnahme rot erscheint. Sowohl Nervenzellen (obere Reihe), als auch Hautkrebszellen (untere Reihe) bilden PpIX. Das linke Bild beider Reihen stellt eine Übersicht dar; die mittleren und rechten Bilder zeigen vergrößerte Ausschnitte der linken Bilder. Grün gefärbt sind die Kraftwerke der Nerven- und Krebszellen, die Mitochondrien. Die Färbemuster von PpIX und dem Mitochondrienfarbstoff ähneln sich. Das legt nahe, dass PpIX sich in den Mitochondrien ablagert.
