Die Tomographie-Bilder zeigen, dass die Bindung zum mGluR5-Protein (rot=starke Bindung) im Gehirn von Rauchern im Durchschnitt um bis zu 30 Prozent verringert ist (oberste Reihe). Auch die Ex-Raucher (mittlere Reihe) zeigten eine Reduktion dieses Proteins um bis zu 20 Prozent. Die unterste Reihe zeigt die Menge des Proteins im Gehirn von Menschen, die nie geraucht haben.
