Die Leber eines Erwachsenen kann unbeschadet in zwei Teilstücke geteilt werden. Bei der "Full-Split-Operation" werden die Leberhälften eines verstorbenen Organspenders zwei Empfängern eingepflanzt (die linke kleinere Hälfte erhielt Philip, die größere rechte Hälfte eine 47-jährige Frau). Bei einer Lebendspende verbleibt eine Hälfte im Körper des Spenders und die andere Hälfte wird transplantiert. Die Organteile wachsen jeweils zu einer vollständigen und funktionstüchtigen Leber heran.
