Metallorganische Käfigstrukturen bestehen aus einer organischen Verbindungseinheit (Zylinder) und einem metallhaltigen Kupplungsstück (Pyramiden). Ziel des EU-Projekts ist, dass sich diese MOFs nach Eintauchen eines speziellen Substrats in eine Mischung von Verbindungseinheiten und Kupplungsstücken auf der Unterlage selbst zusammenbauen. Die entstehenden Käfigstrukturen können mit metallischen Nanoteilchen beladen werden.
