Der Preis für die beste Habilitation im Fach Geschichte erinnert an den den Mediävisten Carl Erdmann (1898-1945). Ihm wurde als Gegner des NS 1936 seine Lehrbefugnis entzogen. 1943 zur Wehrmacht eingezogen, überlebte er den Zweiten Weltkrieg nicht.
