Die Abbildung zeigt in dunkler Farbe die eigentliche Ostsee mit einer Fläche von ungefähr 412.000 km² und einem Volumen von etwa 21.000 km³. Das Einzugsgebiet ist dagegen viermal größer als die eigentliche Ostsee. Neue Hochrechnungen gehen davon aus, dass hier etwa 85 Millionen Menschen beheimatet sind.
