Querschnitt durch eine Recycling-Station der Erde (Subduktionszone) am Beispiel von Kamtschatka. Die ozeanische Lithosphäre (grau) versenkt in Pfeilrichtung quasi Huckepack ozeanische Kruste einschließlich wasserhaltiger Meeressedimente. Diese entwässern bis in Erdmanteltiefen von rund 100 km zunächst wasserreiche, flüssigkeitsähnliche Fluide (1) und schmelzen bei größeren Tiefen auf (2). Dadurch werden in den Zonen 1 und 2 unterschiedliche chemische Elemente aus den Meeressedimenten mobilisiert und führen zu unterschiedlicher chemischer Zusammensetzung von Laven der darüber liegenden Vulkane (orange und rote Stoffkreisläufe). Große Vulkaneruptionen tragen wiederum mit großen Aschemengen zum Aufbau von Meeressedimenten bei. Die Recycling-Station füttert sich selbst.
