Ob zwei Elektronen gleichzeitig oder kurz nacheinander aus dem Atom geschleudert werden, beobachten Physiker anhand des Rückstoßes des Atomkerns: in der linken Bildhälfte schlägt ein Photon nur ein Elektron aus dem Atom. Das Taumeln des Atomkerns wird in der halbmondförmigen Verteilung sichtbar (Mitte links). Rechts werden dagegen beide Elektronen gleichzeitig aus dem Atom katapultiert. Sie stieben mit gleichem Schwung in entgegen gesetzte Richtungen davon, der Atomkern bleibt deshalb in Ruhe liegen. Dies zeigt sich in der mittigen Verteilung der Messwerte (Mitte rechts).
