Zum ersten Präsidenten der Fachhochschule Gelsenkirchen wurde am Montag, 05. Mai 2008 Prof. Dr. Bernd Kriegesmann gewählt. Die Position des Präsidenten ersetzt den früheren Rektor. Grund für die Neufassung von Position und Bezeichnung des Hochschulleiters ist das seit 2007 geltende Landeshochschulgesetz und die sich daraus ableitende neue Grundordnung der Fachhochschule Gelsenkirchen.
