In allen Ländern Nordafrikas, im Nahen Osten und vielen Ländern in Zentral Asien hat die Bevölkerung weit weniger als 1000 Kubikmeter Wasser pro Person und Jahr zur Verfügung. Hohes Bevölkerungswachstum in diesen Gebieten und der Klimawandel werden das Problem des Wassermangels in diesen ariden Gebieten weiter verschärfen.
