Der Lago di Cadagno in den südlichen Schweizer Alpen ist eine Besonderheit: Er ist geschichtet, weil salzhaltige Quellen in der Tiefe eine Durchmischung verhindern. In den oberen 11 Metern ist Sauerstoff vorhanden und der Nährstoffgehalt (Phosphat und Ammonium) niedrig. Die untere Schicht ist angereichert mit diesen Nährstoffen. Es bildet sich eine stabile Zwischenschicht mit steilen Konzentrationsverläufen an Sauerstoff, Sulfat und Sulfid heraus. Hier nutzen die drei untersuchten Mikrobenarten die Lichtenergie, um Sulfid zu oxidieren.
