Jede Farbe markiert Bereiche, in denen Nervenzellen lokalisiert sind, die bevorzugt bei bestimmten Orientierungswinkeln von Konturen aktiv sind. Die Helligkeit gibt an, wie zuverlässig die Signale sind. Von links nach rechts wurde der Kontrast des Gitterreizes erniedrigt (obere Reihe). Die resultierenden Orientierungskarten sind weitgehend identisch, also vom Kontrast unabhängig.
