Zwei Bilder von M51 im Vergleich: Das linke Bild wurde mit dem Spitzer-Weltraumobservatorium aufgenommen, das rechte mit dem vor kurzem gestarteten Herschel Weltraumobservatorium. Die Vorteile des um ein Vielfaches größeren Herschel-Teleskops werden in der wesentlich höheren Auflösung des Bildes deutlich: Herschel macht Details und Strukturen sichtbar, die in der Aufnahme mit Spitzer nicht zu erkennen sind. Beide Bilder sind bei einer Wellenlänge von 160 Mikrometern aufgenommen.
