Bei der Bewegung der Sonde eines Rasterkraftmikroskops entlang der Längsachse eines Kohlenstoff-Nanotubes wird die Reibung weitgehend von steifen Kohlenstoff-Kohlenstoff-Bindungen verursacht und das Nanotube wird kaum deformiert (linkes Bild). Bei einer Bewegung senkrecht zur Längsachse des Nanotubes kommt eine Gesamtverformung des Nanotubes hinzu, die einem "verhinderten Rollen" ähnelt und eine weitere Quelle für Reibungverluste darstellt (rechtes Bild).
