Die beiden Voyagersonden erreichten den Rand der Heliosphäre, den sog. Terminations-Schock, im Jahr 2005 bzw. 2007 und nahmen lokal Daten auf. Obwohl spannend und wertvoll, haben diese Daten mehr Fragen aufgeworfen als beantwortet. IBEX nimmt nun alle sechs Monate eine Himmelskarte des Flusses von energiereichen Wasserstoffatomen (ENA = energetic neutral atoms) auf. Die gezeigte Karte mit ihren komplexen Strukturen ist das Ergebnis der ersten vollständigen Himmelsabtastung.
