Schlechte Bilanz: Um zu berechnen, ob die Landschaft Europas Treibhausgase speichert oder freisetzt, haben Klimaforscher erstmals auch Methan- und Stickoxidemissionen aus der Viehhaltung und intensiven Landwirtschaft berücksichtigt. Demnach setzen Wälder, Gras- und Ackerland vor allem in Mitteleuropa unterm Strich Treibhausgase frei (in Kohlendioxid-Äquivalenten/ rote Färbung). Auf diese Weise nivellieren sie fast völlig den Effekt, den etwa russische Wälder als Kohlendioxidspeicher ausüben (blaue Färbung).
