10 Meter hoher Schwarzer Raucherkamin (Black Smoker) am ostpazifischen Rücken 21° Nord in 2500 Meter Tiefe. Heiße Fluide (bis 365 Grad) entströmen dem Meeresgrund. Sie sind reich an Mineralien aus der Erdkruste, die in der 3 Grad kalten Tiefsee schlagartig ausfallen. Es bilden sich kaminartige Strukturen, die reiches mikrobielles Leben ermöglichen. Die Mikroorganismen dienen als Nahrungsgrundlage in der sonst nährstoffarmen Tiefsee, so dass auch Höheres Leben stattfinden kann.
