Beim Carbonate-Looping-Verfahren wird natürlich vorkommender Kalkstein genutzt, um das CO2 zunächst in einem ersten Reaktor aus dem Abgasstrom des Kraftwerks zu binden. In einem zweiten Reaktor wird das reine Kohlendioxid wieder freigesetzt. Der Vorteil des Carbonate-Looping-Verfahrens ist, dass auch bestehende Kraftwerke mit dem Verfahren nachgerüstet werden können.
