Bei besonders tiefem Luftdruck über Island herrscht gleichzeitig besonders hoher Luftdruck über den Azoren. Dieses Phänomen wird Nordatlantische Oszillation (NAO) genannt, prägt vor allem im Winter die Witterung in Mitteleuropa und sorgt dabei für warme und niederschlagsreiche Winter. Erlebt Mitteleuropa einen solchen milden Winter, dann herrscht im Mittelmeerraum Trockenheit. Ist die NAO hingegen weniger stark ausgeprägt, so erlebt Mitteleuropa einen kalten Winter und es regnet im Mittelmeerraum besonders viel. Mit der neuen Methode ist es nun möglich diese Phänomene der Telekonnektionen detaillierter zu untersuchen als zuvor.
