Im Jahr 1997 wurden in Deutschland durchschnittlich 1,37 Kinder pro Frau geboren – fast genauso viele wie 2008. Auf regionaler Ebene hat sich jedoch eine Menge verändert. Viele westdeutsche Landkreise mit ehemals hohen Kinderzahlen haben sich bis 2008 dem Durchschnitt angepasst oder liegen sogar darunter. Dagegen haben die meisten ostdeutschen Regionen stark aufgeholt. Vor allem in urbanen Gebieten mit vielen gut qualifizierten und erwerbstätigen Frauen ist die Fertilität gestiegen.
