Fluoreszenzmikroskopische Aufnahmen der Zapfenzellen in der Retina einer erwachsenen gesunden Ratte (oben) und einer erwachsenen hypothyreoten Ratte (unten). Die Zapfentypen wurden mit Antikörpern gegen die Opsine angefärbt, das Grün-Opsin ist grün und das UV/Blau-Opsin purpur dargestellt. Die gesunde Ratte besitzt viele Grünzapfen und wenige UV/Blau-Zapfen. Eine Abnahme des Schilddrüsenhormonspiegels führt zur Bildung von UV/Blau-Opsin in allen Zapfen und der Abnahme von Grün-Opsin. Die heller purpur erscheinenden Zapfen im unteren Bild sind solche, die neben viel UV/Blau-Opsin auch etwas Grün-Opsin enthalten.
