Schnelle und drastische Änderungen in seiner Umwelt ist der Blasentang Fucus vesiculosus eigentlich gewohnt. Trotzdem sind seine Populationen in der Ostsee deutlich geschrumpft. Der Grund könnte in komplexen Wechselwirkungen innerhalb der Ökosysteme zu finden sein, die schon kleinste Veränderungen der Durchschnittswerte zu großen Auswirkungen potenzieren.
