Links: Pluteuslarve (ca. 0,2 mm lang) unter dem Konfokalmikroskop (Spikel rot markiert). Die Larve wird mit einer Haltepipette in einem Wasserbad unter dem Mikroskop gehalten, sodass die Flüssigkeit im Wasserbad kontinuierlich ausgetauscht werden kann; rechts: die gleiche Larve, mit einem pH sensitiven Farbstoff gefärbt. Die kalzifizierenden Zellen (sogenannte PMC Zellen) sind als grüne Punkte entlang der Spikel in den Armen sichtbar.
