Podozyten sind hochdifferenzierte Zellen der Niere, die die äußere Schicht der glomerulären Filtrationsbarriere bilden und zwischen deren fußförmigen Ausläufern, den Filtrationsschlitzen, der Filtrationsprozess abläuft (A). Bei der Fokal segmentalen Glomerulosklerose, einer chronischen Erkrankung der Niere, treten Vernarbungen des Filterapparates auf (Sklerose). Die fußförmigen Ausläufer der Podozyten sind stark abgeflacht, so dass die Filtrationsschlitze in ihrer Funktion gestört sind (B).
