Eine Test-Skala, an der Rohrverschleiß abgelesen werden kann: Jede Signalfrequenz-Linie steht für den Abnutzungsgrad eines Rohres: Die rote Linie zeigt ein völlig intaktes Rohr, die blaue ein abgenutztes, das reif zum Austausch wäre. Vergleichen die Forscher jetzt bei der Prüfung eines Rohres die Signale, die sie aus der Rohrwand erlauschen, mit dieser Skala, können sie den Abnutzungsgrad exakt ablesen. Derzeit arbeiten die Ingenieure daran, Skala und Signalfrequenz noch weiter zu optimieren.
