Die TROPOS-Forscher messen an der Station Melpitz nicht nur seit 20 Jahren die Standardmessgröße PM10 (Partikel mit einem Durchmesser bis zu zehn Mikrometern) sondern seit 10 Jahren mit PM2.5 und PM1 (Partikel mit einem Durchmesser von bis zu 2,5 bzw. einem Mikrometern) auch die wesentlich kleineren Teile des Feinstaubes, deren chemische Inhaltsstoffe und auch ihr hochaufgelöstes Größenspektrum.
