Während der Kleinen Eiszeit zwischen zirka 1250 und 1860 traten verschiedene Kälterückfälle auf, welche Künstler zu Bildern anregten. Diese Winterlandschaft wurde von Pieter Brueghel dem Jüngeren im Jahre 1601 nach einer Vorlage seines Vaters aus dem Jahre 1565 gemalt.
