Bild einer Galaxie (Bildmitte), in die kalte Materieströme von Gas fließen. Es handelt sich um das Ergebnis einer Supercomputersimulation der Entstehung einer Galaxie. Einer der Materieflüsse wird von hinten von einem entfernten Quasar beleuchtet (unten links, nachträglich ebenso wie der Sternenhintergrund von Hand hinzugefügt). Forscher unter der Leitung von Neil Crighton (MPIA und Swinburne University of Technology) haben jetzt erstmals mithilfe einiger der weltgrößten Teleskope ein solches System beobachtet, in dem urtümliches Gas in eine Galaxie fließt, in welcher laufend in großer Zahl neue Sterne entstehen – und damit theoretische Vorhersagen bestätigt. Die Simulation ist Teil des Projekts "Making Galaxies in a Cosmological Context" (MaGICC) der Theoriegruppe Galaxien und Kosmologie am Max-Planck-Institut für Astronomie (MPIA).
