Die Funktion des Vesikulären Protein-Sortierungsfaktors VPS54 beim Vesikeltransport. Gezeigt ist ein Schnitt durch einen Teil einer Säugerzelle, in der der "Rückverkehr" mikroskopisch kleiner Bläschen (Vesikel) mit ihrer Fracht (Kästchen) von der Zellmembran zum Golgi-Apparat abläuft. Der entsprechende "Hinverkehr", die Exozytose, wurde zur Vereinfachung weggelassen. Am Andocken sind zwei Erkennungskomplexe beteiligt Das bei der neurodegenerativen Erbkrankheit "wobbler" betroffene Protein VPS54 gehört zu dem links dargestellten Komplex und ist ein notwendiger Baustein für die Verankerung des Vesikels an seinem Zielort Golgimembran. Der ebenfalls notwendige, rechts in Form zweier Haken dargestellte Komplex besteht aus den sogenannten SNAREs (je eins am Vesikel und an der Golgi-Membran), die die Fusion der beiden Membranen vermitteln und von der wobbler-Mutation nicht betroffen sind.
