Der Holzschnitt von Lucas Cranach dem Jüngeren, um 1540, zeigt eine typisierte Selbstdarstellung der neuen evangelischen Kirche. In der Mitte Martin Luther, vor sich die Bibel, das Evangelium predigend und dabei auf Jesus Christus weisend. Zu Luthers Rechten präsentiert sich die neue Lehre: Zwei Pfarrer teilen das Abendmahl unter beiderlei Gestalt aus. Zu Luthers Linken dagegen die Gegner des wiederentdeckten Evangeliums, nämlich Mönche, Priester, Bischöfe, Kardinäle und der Papst, die vom Höllenrachen verschlungen werden.
