Ein abgeerntetes Hirsefeld in der Grenzregion Burkina Faso/Benin: Auch in abgelegenen Gebieten steigt durch das starke Bevölkerungswachstum der Nutzungsdruck auf die Böden. Das führt schon ohne die drohende weitere Klimaverschlechterung zu Ernteeinbußen. Im Projekt Biota-West wird unter anderem an der Optimierung traditioneller, weithin in Vergessenheit geratener Methoden zur Bodenverbesserung gearbeitet, bei der die Förderung von Bodenorganismen - in erster Linie bestimmter Termitenarten - nicht nur die Bodenfruchtbarkeit erhält, sondern darüber hinaus die Regeneration schwerst degradierter Böden erlaubt.
