LINKS: Eine herkömmliche Festplatte. Der Schreib-Lese-Kopf fliegt über die rotierende Platte und kann die Ausrichtung der magnetischen Domänen verändern bzw. abfragen. RECHTS: Das IBM-Konzept eines "Racetracks". Mit Hilfe von Strompulsen werden die magnetischen Domänen mit sehr großer Geschwindigkeit an den Schreib-Lese-Elementen vorbei "geschoben", ohne dass es zu einer mechanischen Bewegung kommt. Die Schreib-Lese-Elemente können die Ausrichtung der magnetischen Domänen verändern bzw. abfragen.
