Außergewöhnliches Carbonat: Die Belegung der gemischt-terminierten ZnO(10 0)-Oberfläche mit CO2 führt sogar schon unterhalb Zimmertemperatur zur Bildung einer ungewöhnlichen, tridentaten ("dreizähningen") Carbonatspezies, bei der alle drei Atome des CO2-Moleküls durch starke, kovalente Bindungen mit den Atomen der Oxidoberfläche verbunden sind. Besonders interessant ist die Existenz einer nur locker gepackten Phase, bei der jeder zweite Adsorptionsplatz noch frei ist.
