Können junge Versuchspersonen zwei nah beieinander liegende Reize, z.B. Zirkelspitzen, gut als getrennte Reize wahrnehmen, so nehmen Ältere dieselben Spitzen als eine wahr. Die Diskriminationsschwelle ist der Abstand zwischen zwei Stimuli, der in 50% der Fälle auch zur Wahrnehmung zweier Reize führt (Diagramme). Überraschend fanden die Bochumer Forscher bei Älteren eine größere Repräsentation der Hand im Gehirn als bei Jüngeren - man hätte erwartet, dass dies mit besseren Leistungen einhergehen würde.
