Durch innovative schleppgeophysikalische Messungen wird der Untergrund im Roßlauer Oberluch untersucht. Mit der Deichöffnung eröffnete sich für das UFZ die einmalige Möglichkeit, das erste großflächig realisierte Auenrenaturierungsprojekt im UNESCO-Biosphärenreservat Mittelelbe wissenschaftlich zu begleiten und die Auswirkungen auf die Auenfunktionen zum Beispiel die Funktionen von Auen als Lebensraum für Pflanzen und Tiere sowie als Rückhalteräume für Hochwasser und Fluss-Sedimente, aber auch den Menschen zu untersuchen. Seit 2007 ist das Rosslauer Oberluch Teil des TERENO-Netzwerks. TERENO - Terrestrial Environmental Observatories - eine Initiative der Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft, ist ein Verbund von Umweltobservatorien in Deutschland, deren Ziel es ist, Langzeitbeobachtungen der Wirkungen von Landnutzungs- und Klimawandel auf die Umwelt zur Verfügung zu stellen und damit verbundene wissenschaftliche Fragen zu klären.
